Ljubljana: Green Capital That Will Charm You

Ljubljana, often called the green capital, is the center of a peaceful and open-minded country. Carefully preserved historical buildings, many of which were created by the famous architect Jože Plečnik, serve as a picturesque scenographic background to a lively and modern city, where there is always an opportunity to discover something new. The capital of Slovenia is known as the venue for many events, surrounded by parks, protected nature areas, smaller towns and endless opportunities for fun adventures.

People began to settle in the wider Ljubljana area more than 4,000 years ago, and the development of the leading settlement in the Ljubljana Basin was influenced in the following centuries by Romanesque, Germanic and, of course, Slavic peoples and their cultures and customs. Today, just under 300,000 people live in the Slovenian metropolis, and every year the town along the Ljubljanica River is visited by a good number of tourists, who are attracted by the hospitable locals and many attractions.

One of them is Ljubljana Castle, located on a hill which you can climb on foot or by cable car along nicely arranged walking paths. The view from the Lookout Tower and the walls offers an idyllic view over most of the city. The sight from the castle hill extends over the old town with the Dragon Bridge, the surrounding hills and slightly more distant peaks of the Alps, as well as Tivoli Park with a iconic sports hall, which hosted many legendary handball matches in Slovenian history.
